Leveraging Decades of Experience & Thousands of Case Victories to Get Results for Clients
The year was 1984, and on a day that Gerald Horning will never forget, he both took and passed the bar exam, and his first child was born. (It was a busy day for Gerald, though his wife, Tolisa, worked even harder that day!) Gerald has practiced law ever since, dedicating his life to representing people wronged by large, powerful companies.
A Call to Serve
“I graduated with a B.A. in 1976 and, as I always wanted to help people and make communities safer, I started working as the Assistant Director of Cleveland's Department of Public Health and Welfare,” said Gerald, reflecting on his trajectory. “I managed four divisions and 500 employees, working on things like access to healthcare, environmental health, air pollution control, and prison administration.”
But that was just the beginning of a long and storied career. Gerald has brought his passion for service, commitment to social betterment, and his love for helping others through several decades and into the present, where he today exhibits the same energy and charismatic good nature that was on display the day, he passed the bar and welcomed his firstborn into the world.
Pursuing a Career in Law
Despite his many accomplishments at the Cleveland Department of Public Health and Welfare, Gerald could not help but feel he was being called to serve elsewhere. He returned to school to seek an MBA and Juris Doctorate, which he obtained in December 1983 through a joint program at Cleveland State University. Gerald has represented thousands of injured clients since, developing a particular skill set in deftly organizing and presenting personal injury cases, including wrongful death, medical malpractice, workplace injury, insurance coverage issues, uninsured motorist cases, product liability, premises liability, and auto accidents of all types.
Gerald joined NRS Injury Law in 2012, where he quickly rose through the ranks to become Senior Associate Attorney. Particularly skilled at understanding the nuances of a case and knowing which strategy best serves that case, Gerald has resolved thousands of cases by settlement, litigation, arbitration, mediation, and trial. He has argued cases in several appellate courts, the Ohio Court of Claims, and the Ohio Supreme Court.
“When the firm gets a particularly complex case, it comes to my desk,” says Gerald. “I feel a deep sense of responsibility to my clients and their cases. It means a lot to me to represent people who have been hurt by powerful corporations. Standing up for them when other firms will not means everything to me because I firmly believe that everyone deserves an ally. Everyone has the right to have someone in their corner.”
Work/Life Balance
Gerald has few moments to spare between practicing law full-time and volunteering in his community, but when he does have a day off, he usually spends it sailing with his friends or getting together with his son and daughter, both of whom live locally. If he can line up a few days off, Gerald takes trips to faraway places like Alaska. Gerald lives with his wife and their cat in Bay Village, Ohio.
