Drawing on a Storied Legal Career to Win Cases for Injured Ohioans
Douglas (Doug) Hunter is a Senior Associate Attorney at NRS Injury Law, focusing on workers’ compensation trials and hearings. Building on a career that’s already seen him successfully resolve hundreds of cases in favor of his clients, Doug’s infallible commitment to helping clients obtain compensation for their losses has made him an invaluable part of the NRS Injury Law team.
An Advocate for the Working People
Doug knew from a very young age that he wanted to pursue law, as his father was a judge and his grandfather was an attorney. As a young man, Doug worked in various fields before his first job as a lawyer, including as a laborer at a rubber plant where he saw how dangerous working-class jobs can be. As fate would have it, Doug’s first attorney role was in workers’ compensation.
“I sort of fell into workers’ comp, really,” Doug says, describing how he became a multi-decade workers’ compensation attorney with a passion for helping working people. “It was my first job out of law school, and while I really enjoyed the field, my first role was as a defense attorney representing employers. I left that job within six months to shift over and help injured workers, but those initial months helped me learn a great deal about how workers’ compensation law is set up in Ohio, and, spoiler alert, it’s not set up to benefit the worker! But my in-depth experience on both sides of the aisle, plus my passion for helping people who are thrown into a system that works against them, makes my role as a plaintiff’s attorney the best one I could ask for.”
Leveraging Decades of Trial Experience to Provide Clients with Their Best Opportunities for Success
Doug’s vast career experience helps him secure benefits for injured workers. In a phrase, he has countless hours in first-chair jury trials, arbitration, and appellate oral arguments. He has perfected the securing and defending of depositions of lay and expert witnesses. He has provided immense trial support and assistance to senior attorneys while assisting in trial preparation and drafting firm pleadings, motions, and briefs.
Throughout his career, Doug has tried civil cases in several Ohio courts, has tried arbitrations, and has argued cases before several Ohio appellate courts. He has represented parties before state and local administrative agencies, including the Industrial Commission of Ohio. Doug has negotiated hundreds of settlements for personal injury and workers’ compensation claims and has additional experience in insurance coverage law, consumer and contract law, and civil defense law. He is also deeply skilled in negotiation, torts, trial practice, third-party liability, and industrial accidents. A trial attorney by nature who focuses primarily on the litigation side of workers’ compensation cases, Doug’s best traits are on full display when he shows up for clients in court.
Work/Life Balance
When he’s not working, Doug spends time with his wife and their three children. Doug is a big fan of Cleveland and Ohio State sports and enjoys golfing and traveling with family and friends. On weekends, Doug can usually be found attending swim meets or golf tournaments. During holidays, he packs the bags, rounds up the family, and hits the road for an adventure.
