Co-Managing the Largest Personal Injury and Workers’ Compensation Law Firm in Ohio
Daniel Romaine is Co-Managing Partner at NRS Injury Law, where he heads the personal injury and auto accident litigation groups. Along with Jerry Schneiberg, who heads the firm’s workers’ compensation groups, Dan directs the firm in all its daily and strategic operations.
A Background in Trades and the Family Business
“Ohio has a rich history in working-class trades, and I grew up in them,” Dan said, describing his upbringing. When Dan was a boy, his parents gave him a job at their steel and fiberglass fabrication shop. “We made custom tanks and ventilation systems for the automobile plating industry,” Dan said.
Throughout high school and college, Dan could be found working the shop floor, first sweeping debris, then cleaning the machines, then eventually running them with the help of veteran fabricators. One summer afternoon during college break, a family friend and local police officer, Don Severo, came into the shop and asked Dan about his plans for the future. After that conversation, Dan took a clerking position at the prestigious Nurenberg, Plevin, Heller & McCarthy injury law firm and his future began to take shape.
Turning to Law to Help Injured Ohioans
“I didn’t know what lawyering was until I started doing it,” Dan said, reflecting on the life experiences that led him to today. “No one in my family had been a lawyer, but I naturally gravitated to the profession and soon found I liked it very much.” Dan had worked as a machinist, lifeguard, salesman, and fundraiser, but nothing piqued his interest like the compassion-driven, fast-paced, high-stakes, and strategic nature of injury law.
After clerking at Nurenberg, Plevin, Heller & McCarthy for two years and passing the bar on his first try in 1996, Dan took a position as an associate attorney at Quandt, Giffels & Buck, where he defended companies from personal injury claims. “I got to see injury law from the perspective of the big corporations and insurance giants who use Ohio’s complex legal codes to their advantage,” Dan said. “I was in that role for two years when two of my fraternity brothers were grievously injured in an automobile accident. They came to me, I represented them, and that experience made it clear my role was to represent people, not corporations.”
Dan sought employment representing injured plaintiffs, and that’s been his life’s commitment since. “I returned to the plaintiff side by joining Sindell, Young, Guidubaldi & Sucher in 1999 and then NRS Injury Law in 2001,” said Dan. “But that experience as a corporate defense attorney gave me a unique understanding of how defense counsel operates. To this day, that knowledge helps me immensely when representing our clients and running operations at NRS Injury Law.”
At the Helm of an Injury Law Firm that Does Things Differently
Dan Romaine understands that being an attorney is more than understanding the state’s legal codes. “When done right, representing injured clients is challenging, intellectually stimulating, and exciting,” Dan says. “You have to understand strategy, medicine, injuries, communication, rhetoric, and debate. You have to connect with clients, answer their questions, and make sure they understand their options. You have to know how to tell their story in a compelling, fact-based and logic-driven way, but you also have to teach clients how to tell it for themselves. You have to bring them onto the team and make them a part of your efforts to see justice delivered.”
Dan brings those values and commitments into play every day in his leadership role at NRS Injury Law. Through his guidance, the firm stands out not just as Ohio’s largest personal injury and workers’ compensation law firm, but as a firm that’s charted a new way forward. “Injured people don’t stand a chance by themselves against the money and power of giant insurance corporations that spent decades cozying up with legislators to produce legal codes that favor them,” Dan said. “But at NRS Injury Law, we have the resources, staff complement, medical advocates, and sheer willingness to take on those uphill battles and deliver victories for our clients.”
Work/Life Balance
When Dan isn’t managing NRS Injury Law or coaching youth sports, he’s spending his free time with his wife, Cynthia, and their two sons. He enjoys fishing, boating, and quiet weekends at the family cottage. Dan is also a travel enthusiast with a taste for adventure, known to schedule trips to Canada’s Northwest Territories to fish for elusive northern pike.
