Fall time change is right around the corner and many of us will be spending more time behind the wheel driving in the dark. According to the National Safety Council, a fatal crash is 3 times more likely to occur in the dark. Since it is unlikely we will hibernate all winter, the key to driving safely at night or in the early morning is to be aware of the risk factors.
Fatigue
The change in season and temperature can have a huge impact on our sleep patterns. Most individuals feel more tired driving in the dark than in the daylight hours. Driver fatigue is a serious risk for accidents. Since many of us drive to and from work in the dark during the winter months, it’s no surprise these months correlate with a higher accident rate.
The National Sleep Foundation reports that about 103 million people fall asleep at the wheel and at least 13% of those individuals report falling asleep on a regular basis! This is the stuff nightmares are made of.
Impaired Drivers
Drunk and drugged driving accidents can occur during the daylight hours, but nighttime accidents as a result of impaired drivers are widespread. The CDC estimates that roughly 30 people die every single day as a result of a drunk or impaired driver. Drive defensively and report suspicious behavior.
If you personally take any medications, talk with your doctor to ensure there are no concerns over night time driving. In the event that you have used alcohol or are impaired by drugs, call for a ride or call an UBER!
Visibility
Put away those sunglasses and turn on your high beams! Dark driving means there is even a greater need of awareness. Be vigilant and look out for animals, road hazards and dangerous drivers.
Take every precaution to ensure you are prepared for nighttime driving:
- Check headlights / have backup light bulbs
- Proper night vision / glasses / contacts
- Adjust dashboard and interior lights
- Clean windshield / Have extra windshield fluid
- Have a safety kit
- Have proper tools
- Keep a flashlight handy
Driving in the dark is virtually unavoidable, but driving safely is easier when these tips are heeded.
